IDP vs British Council: Which one should I choose while taking IELTS Test?

There are individuals who are unsure if there are any actual differences between IDP and British Council in terms of IELTS certification.

There are individuals who are unsure if there are any actual differences between IDP and British Council in terms of IELTS certification. There is a common belief that IDP certification is only valid in Australia and British Council certification is only valid in the UK. However, the truth is that there is no difference in writing the exam through either IDP or British Council. The marking criteria for both are exactly the same. The IELTS test is recognized and accepted in numerous countries, including Canada, New Zealand, UK, USA, and many others, regardless of whether it is taken through IDP or British Council.

The history of IELTS dates back to 1980 when it was initially known as the English Language Testing Service. It was launched by Cambridge English Language Assessment and the British Council with a focus on English as a communicative language and English for specific purposes. Over time, the test underwent revisions to address practical challenges and gain international participation. The International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP), now known as IDP: IELTS Australia, joined the partnership to contribute to the redesigning process.

When it comes to the nature of the test, the questions are created by the Cambridge English Language Assessment, so there is no difference between taking the test through British Council or IDP.

Both IDP and British Council follow the same training process for examiners. The Listening and Reading tests are based on correct or wrong answers, with evaluation focused on the number of correct responses. In the Writing and Speaking tests, examiners from both IDP and British Council undergo the same training and follow identical marking criteria. They are regularly monitored to ensure consistent evaluation.

The accents used by examiners and test takers are not influenced by the organization conducting the test. The examiner can be from any country and use any accent, and test takers can also use their preferred accent.

When deciding between IDP and British Council, factors to consider include proximity to the test center, availability of necessary equipment such as headphones for the Listening test, availability of test dates that align with your preparation and confidence level, and the fee and format of the exam. It is important to choose a center that suits your needs and preferences without incurring unnecessary exhaustion or inconvenience.

Overall, whether you choose IDP or British Council, the test content, scoring, and recognition of IELTS remain the same, allowing you to select the option that best suits your logistical requirements.
