Band 7 essay

Band 7 essay about increasing tax on fast foods

In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

The essay highlights the issue of health problems arising from the overconsumption of fast food and discusses the idea of imposing a higher tax on such food items. However, the student argues that this approach may not be the most effective solution. Instead, they propose promoting healthy food options and lifestyle choices to tackle the problem. Here’s a revised version of the essay:

It is evident that the continuous consumption of fast food can lead to various health problems. Some countries are considering increasing taxes on fast food as a potential solution. However, I believe that this measure may not be the most efficient or effective way to address the issue.

Raising taxes on fast food is likely to have only a minimal impact on curbing excessive junk food consumption. For many individuals, the primary reason for choosing fast food over healthier alternatives is the convenience it offers, not solely its low price. Thus, even with a higher tax, people may still prefer fast food due to its ease and accessibility. Moreover, some individuals resort to fast food simply because they lack viable alternatives. Healthier food options, such as organic produce, often come with a higher price tag, making them unaffordable for many. Increasing the cost of fast food may further limit food choices for these individuals, leading to hardships in their lives.

Instead of relying solely on increased taxes, governments should focus on making healthy food more convenient and affordable for citizens. Rather than interfering excessively in the market, a better approach would be to encourage the consumption of nutritious food. This can be achieved by supporting the commercial cultivation of organic produce, which could lead to lower prices for consumers. Additionally, investing in educational campaigns and training programs to promote a healthy lifestyle would be a practical and effective solution to address the fast food issue.

In conclusion, to tackle the health problems arising from the excessive consumption of fast food, governments should prioritize promoting a healthy lifestyle among citizens rather than solely resorting to higher taxes on fast food items.
