How Not to Do True/False/Not given Type of Question in IELTS Reading

The True False Not Given type of questions in IELTS reading can be quite tricky.

The True False Not Given type of questions in IELTS reading can be quite tricky. Let’s discuss some important points to avoid while attempting these questions to solve them correctly.

1. Not Caring About the Instruction:

Many students mistakenly write Yes/No/Not Given instead of following the correct format T/F/NG. Always read the instructions carefully and make sure to write the answers in the specified format to avoid losing marks.

2. Ignoring the Not Given Option:

Some students tend to overlook the Not Given option and mark False for questions they don’t find explicit information for. Always check if the question is asking for Not Given, and if the information is not present, mark it as such.

3. Ignoring the Controlling Words:

Controlling words like “only,” “never,” “sometimes,” “always,” “ever,” “all,” “some,” “a little,” “more,” and “many” can change the meaning of a question. Pay close attention to these words as they can turn a question from False to Not Given or even True.

4. Spending Too Much Time:

Don’t spend excessive time on a single Not Given question. If you can’t find the information in the passage, move on to the next question. Spending too much time on one question can affect your performance in other parts of the reading section.

Remember, being attentive to the instructions, identifying Not Given questions, considering controlling words, and managing your time effectively will improve your accuracy in answering True False Not Given questions in the IELTS reading test.
