Every day, millions of tons of food are wasted all over the world. Why do you think this is happening? And how can we solve this problem?

Sample Model Answer:

Food wastage has emerged as a significant global problem, with millions of tons of edible food being discarded daily. The reasons for this issue are diverse, and it is crucial to explore the root causes and propose effective solutions to address this pressing concern.

Firstly, the changing mindset towards money plays a pivotal role in the increased food wastage. As people’s earning potential has risen considerably, the value of thriftiness and saving has diminished. In the past, every bit of food was conserved, either by recycling or storing it for future consumption. However, with improved financial status, individuals have started to disregard the importance of preserving food and tend to dispose of unconsumed portions carelessly. Additionally, the rise of competitive pricing in the food industry, driven by the proliferation of small eateries and roadside vendors, has fostered a culture of wastefulness among various social classes.

Moreover, the abundance of food choices, coupled with compelling marketing strategies and advertisements, further contributes to the problem. The overwhelming variety of food products available in the market entices people to indulge in trying new items regularly. Consequently, the preservation of excess food becomes less appealing, leading to its eventual disposal rather than being consumed at a later time.

Nevertheless, there are viable solutions to combat food wastage. Foremost, creating awareness through targeted campaigns can alter the public’s mindset and sensitize them to the issue of food wastage. By highlighting the environmental and social consequences of this practice, people can be encouraged to adopt responsible food consumption habits. Furthermore, measures like imposing fines on food wastage in hotels can serve as a deterrent and promote more prudent food handling. Additionally, initiatives such as community fridges, where individuals can contribute their surplus food to be redistributed among the less privileged, can be expanded to reduce wastage.

In conclusion, food wastage is a concerning global issue driven by changing financial attitudes, competitive pricing, and abundant food choices. However, through awareness campaigns and practical initiatives, we can collectively address this problem and promote a more sustainable and conscientious approach towards food consumption.
