Time management is the key to a high band score in IELTS Reading

Candidates often express frustration about the time constraints in the Reading test.

Candidates often express frustration about the time constraints in the Reading test. They find the lengthy and challenging articles overwhelming, making it seemingly impossible to complete all the questions within the given hour.

To tackle this issue, it is beneficial to mentally allocate only 50 minutes for completing all the questions. If your goal is to achieve a high band score, leaving 10 minutes at the end to review your answers can be invaluable.

Keep in mind that not all sections carry the same level of difficulty. The first section typically comprises a text and questions that are relatively easier than the subsequent sections. Focus on reading the topic sentences only, swiftly move to the questions, and get an idea of where the answers might be located in the text. Completing the first section should ideally take about seven to ten minutes. Aim to achieve this time frame in your practice tests.

The second and third sections usually contain trickier questions, demanding more comprehensive reading. The sentences in these sections become longer and more intricate, and there is a higher chance of being misled by distractors or inferring information incorrectly. For each article in these sections, allocate approximately fifteen minutes for reading and five minutes for answering the questions. If you find this challenging, practice reading 1200-word long news articles until you can confidently complete them in 15 minutes. Remember, achieving a favorable test result always requires diligent effort and hard work.
