In the IELTS writing task 2, candidates are given 40 minutes to write a minimum of 250 words. Writing fewer than 250 words may result in penalties from the examiner. It is crucial to effectively cover all essential aspects of the question. Let’s attempt the following IELTS writing task 2 question.

Question:

In many countries, school-age children spend their free time doing homework. Is it a good or a bad thing? Give examples based on your own experience.

Sample Answer:

It is a prevailing trend in several countries that school students spend a considerable amount of their leisure time completing homework, which is not beneficial as it can negatively impact their health and deprive them of other activities like sports and entertainment.

To start with, it is a common practice in many countries for children attending schools to dedicate a substantial portion of their time to homework. The pressure to complete additional work on subjects like Science, Mathematics, and others contributes to this situation. Meeting tight deadlines leaves them with no choice but to prioritize their homework. Furthermore, intense competition is a significant factor. Students are compelled to devote excessive hours to studies to achieve outstanding results. For instance, scoring 90% is often insufficient, given the fierce competition where many students are achieving 98% marks. To outperform this 8% margin, they spend hours over their studies, often sacrificing other activities.

Moreover, this escalating trend among school children is concerning as it jeopardizes their well-being. Firstly, students miss out on participating in physical activities such as playing cricket, basketball, and other sports, impacting their overall health and fitness. Additionally, entertainment and fun-related pursuits like playing musical instruments or dancing are limited, leading to a monotonous school life.

In conclusion, it is not appropriate for students to spend the majority of their time doing homework. They should be encouraged to allocate a balanced amount of time to various activities.
