In order to write an effective IELTS Writing Task 2 essay, it is crucial to align your response well with the assessment criteria, as failure to do so may result in penalties and a lower band score. Some common reasons for lowered scores include writing fewer than 250 words, providing irrelevant responses to the topic, lacking examples to support ideas, and making grammatical and punctuation errors. Let’s now attempt the following IELTS Writing Task 2 question:

Question:

Some individuals argue that giving children a smaller amount of money weekly will help them become more financially capable as they grow older. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer:

A segment of society believes that providing children with a weekly allowance fosters a sense of responsibility towards money. While this may hold some truth, I disagree with the notion that money should be given every week and propose that it should be allocated on a need basis.

To begin with, many parents feel inclined to pay their children on a regular basis. One possible reason is that offering a sum of money to children instills a sense of accountability. They understand that the money they receive is tied to certain actions, such as completing chores or maintaining a clean study table. Furthermore, having money at their disposal allows children to learn the art of financial management as they consider their needs and make choices, whether it’s buying a notebook or indulging in a treat. By managing their money based on their specific needs, they develop practical skills.

However, there are drawbacks to this approach. Many children might come to expect a weekly allowance rather than understanding the concept of money being given based on necessity. Consequently, they may become dependent on receiving money frequently, leading to increased demands and requests from their parents. Additionally, this practice might lead children to overvalue money, potentially overshadowing the importance of virtues such as honesty, kindness, and trustworthiness. For example, a child receiving $10 every week might perceive money as the sole means to acquire anything, neglecting other valuable qualities.

In conclusion, while some argue that children will gain a better understanding of managing money efficiently as they mature, I disagree with this perspective. Instead, I believe that children should be given a smaller amount of money, allocated on a need basis rather than a weekly schedule.
