The first step to writing a good essay in IELTS Writing Task 2 is to identify the type of question. The questions asked in this task can be divided into seven types, including agree/disagree, discuss two opinions, advantages and disadvantages, causes (reasons) and solutions, cause (reasons) and effects, problems and solutions, and compare and contrast.
For the ‘agree/disagree’ type of essay, you need to clearly state your stance on the given statement. The introduction should start with a paraphrased version of the question, followed by a clear statement of your agreement or disagreement. The introduction should also briefly mention the points that will be discussed in the body of the essay.
In the main body of the essay, you should emphasize your stance and provide strong arguments supported by relevant examples. Each paragraph should focus on one main idea and should be supported with evidence and examples to make your argument stronger.
In the conclusion, you need to restate your agreement or disagreement and summarize the main points discussed in the body. You may also suggest a possible solution or offer a concluding thought related to the topic.
Using appropriate vocabulary is crucial in conveying your ideas effectively. Phrases like “I strongly agree that,” “I am of the opinion that,” and “There is no doubt that” can be used to state your point of view clearly. Additionally, “For instance,” “For example,” and “Furthermore” can be used to provide examples and support your arguments.
Overall, structuring your essay with a clear introduction, well-developed body paragraphs, and a strong conclusion, along with the use of appropriate vocabulary, will help you write a coherent and convincing ‘agree/disagree’ essay in IELTS Writing Task 2.
