Band 7 Essay Sample – Should the Minimum Driving Age be 18 or 25?

The minimum age to start driving is a topic of debate, with some advocating for it to be set at 18 years old, while others argue that it should be raised to 25. This essay will examine both perspectives and provide a reasonable conclusion.

On one hand, proponents of the current rule, which sets the minimum driving age at 18, argue that most teenagers achieve biological maturity at this age. Numerous scientific studies conducted in various countries have concluded that juveniles can effectively learn to drive and overcome their road fears by the age of 18. Moreover, at this stage, young adults often enter college or begin working, and having access to personal transportation becomes crucial for leading an independent life. Hence, many countries allow individuals to start driving at 18 years old.

On the other hand, some individuals contend that the minimum age for obtaining a driving license should be increased to 25 due to the seriousness of driving as a responsibility. They assert that many young people get carried away by the passion for speeding, leading to severe road accidents. For example, in countries with poorly maintained roads and high chances of vehicle collisions, reckless speeding is a common factor contributing to fatal accidents, as seen in India. Consequently, raising the driving age to 25 could potentially enhance citizen safety.

In conclusion, considering the points discussed above, I believe that governments should continue to issue driving licenses at the age of 18. This is because 18-year-olds are generally capable of learning driving skills, and having access to personal transportation is essential for their independence. However, to curb reckless driving tendencies, strict traffic laws and stringent enforcement must be put in place. By promoting responsible driving behavior and providing proper education, the potential risks associated with young drivers can be minimized, making the roads safer for everyone.
