It is quite common to observe that students aiming to achieve a band score of 7 in each module of IELTS often find the writing module challenging. Many of them take the exam repeatedly, yet they remain unaware of the specific areas they need to improve in their writing skills, resulting in consistent scores of 6.5.

In many cases, the main issue lies in grammar mistakes, which hinder their writing from reaching the level of band 7. For others, the problem lies in their inability to balance their efforts between task 1 and task 2. While they may excel in writing a letter (or report in the case of academics), they tend to falter in composing an essay.

It is crucial, therefore, to have a clear understanding of the assessment factors required to achieve a band score of 7 when attempting both writing task 1 and task 2. These factors include task response, grammar, sentence connectors, vocabulary, and more.

Let us now delve into the band descriptors that guide us in obtaining a band score of 7. Below are the key assessment factors explained to provide you with an idea of the level of performance required to achieve a band 7:

1. Task Achievement:

– You have addressed all parts of the essay question.

– Your response to the question is consistently clear.

– You have presented relevant ideas, elaborated on them effectively, and provided appropriate examples in the body paragraphs.

– However, there may be instances where your ideas are too general, and your examples lack focus in supporting your arguments.

2. Coherence and Cohesion:

– Your ideas are logically organized, and the overall flow is coherent in relation to the question.

– You have utilized cohesive devices, such as “in addition,” “moreover,” “on the other hand,” etc., but their usage may be either too little or excessive.

– The main ideas of the paragraphs are clear.

3. Lexical Resource:

– You are using an adequate range of vocabulary that allows for flexibility and precision.

– Occasionally, you employ uncommon words; however, there may be limited awareness of style and word collocation, leading to occasional mistakes in word choice, formation, or spelling.

4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

– You are capable of forming a variety of complex sentences.

– Your sentences are largely free from grammar and punctuation errors.

– However, there might be a few mistakes in grammar and punctuation.

Overall Band 7 Description:

A candidate with a band score of 7 is described as a “Good User” of the English language. This means the candidate has a functional command of the language, occasionally making some mistakes related to accuracy, appropriateness, and misunderstanding. The candidate can typically understand complex arguments and detailed reasoning.

Sample Answer:

In today’s modern world, technology is constantly advancing, and the internet stands out as one of the most powerful tools, bringing people closer together. The internet has significantly transformed and improved the way people socialize.

Firstly, the internet has brought numerous benefits by allowing people to socialize more effectively. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have revolutionized communication, making it more convenient and economical. Instant messaging through the internet has replaced the long waits for sending and receiving messages. For example, people can now send instant messages on Facebook with ease and speed.

On the other hand, there are drawbacks to consider regarding the internet’s impact on social interaction. Face-to-face interaction has diminished as people increasingly rely on online communication. Additionally, internet addiction has given rise to health-related problems such as poor eyesight and backaches. For instance, people often use internet devices while lying down, affecting their posture and causing backaches.

In conclusion, the internet has undoubtedly benefited mankind by reducing distances and facilitating communication, but it has also led to new health-related issues and other concerns.
