Let's analyze an IELTS speaking response given by a student in a mock test and identify why it is a Band 6 response.

Let’s analyze an IELTS speaking response given by a student in a mock test and identify why it is a Band 6 response.

Question: Should education be about memorizing the ideas of the past?

Response: I am not in agreement with this statement because when we receive education, different people have different ideas. We cannot simply memorize past ideas. Ideas are subjective and unique to each individual.

Remarks:

– The candidate has given an opinion, but the reasoning is not entirely relevant to the question.

– There are grammar errors, such as “I am not agree” instead of “I do not agree,” and “ideas is” instead of “ideas are.”

Question: Should education encourage new ideas?

Response: I think so because education enhances the level of thinking and knowledge. So, there is an opportunity to create new ideas when people are educated and have knowledge about various concepts.

Remarks:

– The opinion is given, and the reasoning is clear.

– “There is opportunity to create new ideas when people are education” can be improved to “So, when people are educated, they can create new ideas.”

Question: How do teachers help students develop their own new ideas?

Response: Definitely, teachers can help students develop new ideas by sharing their own experiences and techniques. They guide students on how to develop new ideas, and I think they help the students in many ways.

Remarks:

– The opinion is given, the reasoning is clear, and a conclusive statement is provided.

– There is a grammar error: “to how to” should be “on how to.”

– The sentence “so the techniques…develop the new ideas” can be improved to “so the techniques…develop the new ideas are really helpful for them.”

Question: Should employers help their employees develop new ideas to improve the company?

Response: Yes, it is very good for the company because workers can play a big role in improving it. Sometimes, small things cannot be changed by employers, but employees can do it. So, employers should encourage their workers to think about new things, and they should follow the workers’ ideas. It will be very beneficial for the company to get ideas from the workers.

Remarks:

– The opinion is clear, and reasoning is given.

– The article “a” in “it is a very good for the company” should be removed to make it “it is very good for the company.”

– There is a self-correction: “worker…workers.”

– Incorrect word usage: “participate” should be “play,” and “just it follow” should be “they should follow.”

– There are grammar errors: “Sometimes what happens is small things cannot be changed.”

– The article “the” should be used in “to get ideas from the worker.”

Expected Band Score: Band 6

The candidate has spoken at length, but there are errors related to grammar, incorrect word usage, and explanations that are sometimes irrelevant. Generally, the opinion is given clearly, but not always. There is hesitation in choosing words to elaborate on statements or provide explanations.
