Model Answer of Recent IELTS Writing Task 1 – Letter (Cafeteria Closure)

IELTS Writing Task 1 requires you to write a letter, either formal or informal. The time allotted for this task is 20 minutes, and your response should be at least 150 words. To practice, attempt the following question, which was recently asked in IELTS Writing Task 1. After writing your response, compare it with the sample answer provided below.

**Question:**

You heard that the cafeteria at your work is planned for closure as it’s not in use. Write a letter to your manager and request to cancel this decision. In your letter:

1. State the reasons for it not being in use.

2. Explain why it is important to leave it open.

3. Suggest what to do with this place.

Write your answer in a minimum of 150 words.

**Sample Answer:**

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to address the issue of the proposed closure of the cafeteria at our workplace due to its declining usage.

One of the key reasons for the cafeteria’s decreased usage is its deteriorating condition. The lack of proper cleanliness and maintenance has led to an uninviting environment for employees. Additionally, the absence of dedicated cafeteria staff to manage its operations has resulted in subpar service and an unpleasant experience for users. The cafeteria’s current state has caused most employees to avoid using it altogether.

However, keeping the cafeteria open is vital for fostering a sense of community and interaction among the workforce. The cafeteria serves as a common space where colleagues can gather informally, share experiences, and engage in team-building conversations. It contributes to employee well-being and helps relieve work-related stress, ultimately boosting productivity and morale.

Instead of closing the cafeteria, I suggest investing in its renovation and appointing dedicated staff to maintain cleanliness and manage daily operations. By upgrading the seating arrangements, improving the food quality, and introducing new menu options, we can revitalize the cafeteria’s appeal and attract more users.

I hope that you will consider my request to keep the cafeteria open and work towards enhancing it as a positive space for all employees.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
