Here are some essential tips to help you prepare for your IELTS exam, whether you’re taking the General Training or Academic test.

Prioritize Rest and Nutrition

The IELTS exam is a lengthy one, lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes for the listening, reading, and writing sections, with no breaks in between. Ensure you are well-rested and have eaten adequately to maintain focus and concentration during the test.

Choose Comfortable Clothing

Your appearance is not assessed during the test, so opt for comfortable clothing that boosts your confidence. As the test room may be air-conditioned and possibly cold, consider bringing an extra layer of clothing.

Stay Hydrated

You are allowed to bring a drink in a transparent bottle into the exam room.

Arrive Early

Familiarize yourself with the route to your IELTS test center and the exact location of your test venue. Arriving late may result in disqualification. Allow enough time for check-in procedures.

Use the Restroom Before the Test

Since there is no break during the 2 hours and 40 minutes of listening, reading, and writing tests, make sure to use the restroom beforehand. If necessary during the test, raise your hand, and an invigilator will guide you, though it will consume valuable time and potentially affect your score.

No Electronic Devices Allowed

Leave your phone and other electronic devices outside the test room.

Bring Necessary Stationery

Pens, pencils, and erasers are permitted, but dictionaries and extra paper are not allowed in the test room. For the speaking test, only bring your ID.

Confirm Required ID

Check with your test center for the specific identification documents you need to bring and ensure you have them on test day.

Listen to Instructions

Pay close attention to all instructions provided before the test begins.

Know the Clock Placement

Familiarize yourself with the location of the clock in the exam room, so you can easily check the time during the reading and writing sections. Watches are not allowed inside the exam room.

Accommodations for Disabilities

If you have a disability that may impact your test performance, contact the test center well in advance to make necessary arrangements.

Maintain Focus and Calmness

Approach your test with a clear goal and a solid grasp of the techniques required. Stay composed and confident throughout the exam.
