Recent Exam Question for the writing task 2- Essay writing ( 5th June 2017)

Some people are very interested in researching their family history. Other people say this is a waste of time and that we should focus instead on the present and future generations.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Include reasons for your answer and any examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In today’s world, some individuals are deeply intrigued by researching their family history, while others argue that this pursuit is a waste of time, advocating instead for a focus on the present and future generations. This essay will discuss both perspectives and provide my own opinion on the matter.

On one hand, there is a growing interest in tracing one’s ancestry and connecting with distant relatives. Despite the challenges of this endeavor, such as sifting through vast amounts of historical records, the rewards can be significant. Discovering long-lost family members and understanding our roots can offer a sense of belonging and identity that was previously unknown. It enables individuals to build stronger connections with their family heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation of their cultural and historical background.

On the other hand, the younger generation often embraces a different outlook. They are accustomed to a world of instant information and easy access to almost everything through technology. They may feel disconnected from the past, finding greater fascination with the possibilities of the present and the potential of the future. Moreover, some may fear that delving into their family history could unearth painful or distressing stories, causing emotional turmoil. As a result, they prioritize forging new paths and shaping their own destinies, emphasizing self-discovery over the exploration of their ancestors.

In my view, both perspectives hold merit and are intertwined in a complex manner. While it is true that the younger generation may be driven by the allure of modernity and novelty, understanding our past is essential for comprehending our present and shaping our future. The knowledge of our roots provides valuable insights into our cultural heritage and family traditions. It can strengthen our sense of identity, instilling a sense of pride and belonging, which is increasingly valuable in today’s diverse and interconnected world.

In conclusion, the fascination with researching family history and the focus on the present and future generations are not mutually exclusive. Each perspective offers unique benefits, and it is essential to strike a balance between embracing our heritage and embracing the opportunities of today and tomorrow. By understanding where we come from, we can better appreciate where we are headed. The past and the future are intrinsically connected, shaping our individual and collective identities.
