IELTS Reading tips

Use the following tips to successfully pass your IELTS reading test.

Use the following tips to successfully pass your IELTS reading test:

1. In Academic Reading, quickly scan each passage to identify important features such as the topic, style, likely source, writer’s purpose, and intended reader.

2. Don’t try to understand every single word or phrase as you read. Focus on the main ideas and overall comprehension, as some parts of the text might not be tested anyway.

3. Pay attention to example answers provided in the reading tasks and understand why they are correct.

4. Follow the instructions carefully, as some tasks may require you to use words directly from the text, while others allow you to use your own words.

5. Take note of any word limits specified in the instructions. Avoid using unnecessary words in your answers to stay within the limit.

To make the most of your Reading test:

1. Observe the title, headings, and special features like capital letters, underlining, italics, figures, graphs, and tables in the text.

2. Ensure that you understand the questions and follow the instructions precisely.

3. Manage your time wisely and avoid spending too much time on a single passage or question.

4. Remember that you are reading for a purpose, so you don’t need to read every word in the text.

5. If you encounter a challenging question, attempt it but don’t dwell on it too long. Move on to the next one.

6. Stay calm even if you are unfamiliar with the subject of the text; all the answers can be found in the reading material.

7. Use words exactly as they appear in the Reading text; do not change their form.

8. Don’t worry about words you don’t understand; you may not need to use them in your answers.

9. Check your spelling and use singular and plural forms accurately.

10. Pay close attention to the instructions for ‘completion’ type questions.

11. Stick to the word limit provided; if the answer requires two words, using more than that will be incorrect.

12. Attempt all questions as there are no penalties for incorrect answers.

13. Double-check your answers before submitting.
